THE GAME OF LIFE

Unfortunately, in the present day Institutional Church there is little that illustrates they know much about the fundamentals, and the way the church is to be truly nurtured and grown. They're playing by rules made up out of thin air. They're not leading - they're controlling and dominating. As a result, they're fielding teams that are losing horribly at the Game of Life.

Now, That's just a few of the "busted plays, missed assignments, dropped balls, and illegal procedures" committed continuously in the Institutional Church. It's time to get back to the fundamentals - the basics of life.

Vince Lombardi, the late, great football coach of the Green Bay Packers professional football team is known for this story.

One Sunday afternoon the Green Bay Packers had a horrible game against an underdog opponent. It was one of those days. If something could go wrong it did. However, it was more than just happenstance.

The entire team played like the underdogs themselves. They missed tackles, dropped passes, busted plays from the line of scrimmage, missed blocking assignments, and were called for an unusual number of penalties due to lack of focus. In general, they played a miserable game of football that left the coach embarrassed and humiliated. They also lost the game decidedly.

As a result, Coach Lombardi determined he would not allow his  players to have their usual Monday practice off. He related to his players on that infamous Sunday he would see them all bright

and early for practice on Monday morning -- at dawn.

The players were not looking forward to seeing Coach Lombardi this "mourning after." When they arrived for practice Lombardi called the entire team over for a brief skull session.
After they had taken a knee and quieted, Lombardi said, "Gentlemen, today we are going back to the fundamentals of the game." He then leaned over, picked up the spiral shaped, air filled pig skin, and gently declared, "Gentlemen…this is a football."

That day the Green Bay Packers went back to working on the basic fundamentals of the game; proper stance at the line of scrimmage, proper placement of hands before catching the ball, proper blocking positions, proper hand alignment when receiving a hand-off from the quarterback, proper hand placement behind the center, proper tackling techniques, etc.

They also went through an entire session on the bare basics and rules of the game, i.e., the field length and width, and penalties such as holding, pass interference, roughing the passer, off-sides, illegal procedure, face-masking, etc., etc.

Think the players were insulted? No, instead they were said to say it was one of the most poignant learning days they ever had.

Why did Lombardi do that? It's simple. Lombardi knew his team was very talented. He also knew a team so talented playing so poorly could have done so only as a result of one thing. They lost sight of the most important thing all players and teams must not lose sight of - the fundamentals of the game. When you do that in football, as well as the game of life, you are headed for failure - one way or the other.

Sometimes we can get so far away from the fundamentals of life we can be like a ship lost at sea with not even a compass, stars at night, or sun in daylight to guide us. It can be pitch black. We can't see a thing - totally blind. Not physically, but spiritually.

"Excellence is achieve by the mastery of the fundamentals."  -- Vice  Lombardi
